NOVEMBER 2007

Artist of the Month: Constance Mavis Hughes

Constance was born in Erskine, Minnesota and was raised in Superior, Wisconsin. She is a graduate of St Lukes  School of nursing in Duluth, Minnesota.

Connie had dabbled in art on and off for a number of years as her children grew up but did not become serious until the loss of her son in 1989. Art became a form of therapy and in the process a fine appreciation as well as a hunger to do more developed. She has mainly studied fine art portraiture under the tutelage of Frank Covino, master artist from Vermont. Her medium has mainly been in oils.

Connie has resided in Meeker, Colorado since 1970. She joined the Rangely Arts council in 2007 as a vehicle for art sharing and expansion of exposure to all art forms in Rio Blanco County.

OCTOBER 2007

Artist of the Month: Charlie Hickman

Charlie Hickman grew up in Boulder and attended Fort Lewis College in Durango. There he received a BA with a major in Art in 2000 and returned to FLC three years later to receive his teaching certificate. He has been teaching art at the elementary and middle schools here in Rangely since 2005.

Charlie and his lovely wife run the Waving Hands Art Club which provides an opportunity for local children to create large murals in public places. You can see the work of Waving Hands in Giant Step, Columbine Medical Clinic, and the pediatric exam room in the hospital.

Artist of the Month: Richard Crandell

Richard was born in 1967 in Grand Junction and has lived on Colorado's western slope most of his life.  He graduated Rangely High School in 1985 and then joined the army.  He spent 2 1/2 years as a flight engineer on a CH-47 chinook in Fort Kobbe, Panama.  He is now a lease operator for Pioneer Natural Resources which enables him to see many various forms of wildlife.
Richard married in 2003 and started taking pictures for his wife and daughter.

When he began sharing the photos with family and friends, they suggested he do something with them.  He started entering his work in the Rio Blanco County Fair and an on-line photography critique site. He started getting ribbons for his photography and has won “Picture of the Day” 6 times on a national photography web-site.  He continues to win contests with his photography.  He won the 3rd Place Public Choice Award in 2007 SeptemberFest’s Art Show just recently for his picture titled “The Stare”.
His proudest moment was getting the cover photograph  for the Herald Times publication "24 Hours in Rio Blanco."

JULY 2007

Artist of the Month: Wendy Roberts

Wendy Roberts Wendy has always loved art.  Her father is a successful artist in Utah.  She grew up watching him paint and sculpt.  She became a volunteer for the Art Enrichment Program in North Carolina and taught art history to elementary schools in the community.  She just never thought she could create it herself...then one day...

Wendy is a photographer and studied at Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, CA.   Just Hold Still Photography is Wendy's portrait and wedding photography business that she has had for over twenty years.  She teaches the photography courses at CNCC.  She has won awards for her photography.   You can see her work on her photography website: justholdstillphotography.com

With her love of photographing people came an interest in drawing, painting and sculpting people.  Wendy studied sculpture under the private tutelage of Kim Terra Nova of Littleton, Colorado before coming to Rangely.  She sold her bronze door knockers at Loveland Invitational Sculpture Show in August of 2003.  She earned an award for her "Indian", a terra cotta sculpture, at the 2005 Septemberfest Art Show.   She exhibited work from all her artistic endeavors at the 2006 Septemberfest in Rangely.

Wendy volunteers in the community as a board member for the Rangely Area Chamber of Commerce and is the Public Affairs Specialist for her church.  She and Kent, her husband of 24 years, have 4 children and reside in Rangely, CO.
